Family Photos for Camera Shy Mothers

A gentle guide for camera-shy mums in Melbourne

If the thought of being in front of a camera makes you want to hide, but your heart knows how important family photos are — you’re in the right place.

One thing that always breaks my heart is seeing mums put off family photos because they’re not happy with how they look. And trust me, I get it. Even as a motherhood photographer, I’m not exactly lining up to be in front of the camera myself.

But here’s what I also know: these photos matter more than you think.
They’re the only way to hold on to what you have right now.
Your babies won’t stay little. Your family won’t stay exactly as it is. And you don’t want to miss this chapter while you can still capture it.

And I know what you’re thinking…
“I don’t look good in photos.”
“I’ll do it when I lose weight.”
“The kids look adorable — that’s all that matters.”

But let’s flip this for a moment.

Think about the photos you have with your mum or grandma.
Do you analyse how they looked?
Or are you just grateful those photos exist?

Your children feel the same way. One day, they’ll hold these photos and think,
“I’m so glad, I have these photos with my mum.”

That’s why I created this guide! To help camera-shy mums relax, feel supported, and actually enjoy being photographed. Because you belong in these photos. And I’ll guide you through simple, practical ways to feel comfortable and natural so you can be fully present with your family and create photos you truly love.

Before we dive in, here’s something I’ve learned after photographing families for over a decade:

With the right guidance, direction and support, you will feel beautiful and at ease, even if you’ve spent their whole life avoiding the camera. You’ll totally walk into your session feeling confident not because you’ve changed anything about yourself, but because you’ll know exactly how to relax, where to look, and how to be yourself in front of the camera.

And it all starts with one thing…

1. Finding the Right Photographer

The Part That Makes Every Other Part Easier

Before we get into outfits, posing, and confidence tricks, there’s something important to understand:
feeling beautiful in photos doesn’t start with the camera, it starts with how supported you feel.

Most mums aren’t professional models, and you absolutely don’t need to be one. Feeling awkward is completely normal. But the right photographer makes that awkwardness melt away.

You might not know where to put your hands, how to stand, or how to smile without feeling stiff.

But here’s the truth:
With the right guidance, posing, and a photographer who genuinely knows how to support you, you will love how you look in your photos, even if you’ve disliked every photo of yourself until now.

Look for someone who:

  • Gives you all the prep help you need — outfits, mindset, and how to gently encourage cooperation from little ones (and hubby!)
  • guides families in a natural, relaxed way
  • makes you feel comfortable before the session
  • knows how to use lighting and angles to flatter every body
  • understands kids and how to keep sessions playful, not stiff

When you feel safe, supported, and seen, the magic happens effortlessly.

My Process (Simple, Stress-Free, and Zero Pressure)

Traditional packages can feel overwhelming — paying everything upfront before you’ve even seen your photos? Yep… stressful.

I do things differently.

You pay a small session fee that covers planning, the photoshoot, and your viewing appointment. After you’ve seen your gallery, then you choose what you want to purchase.

You only buy what you absolutely love.
No pressure. No locked-in packages. No guessing whether you’ll like the results.

And honestly, that freedom alone helps you relax before we even start.

My Love Your Images Guarantee

To help you feel even more at ease, I offer a Love Your Images Guarantee.
If you’re not happy with your photos, your session fee is refunded. Simple.

When there’s no risk, it becomes so much easier to relax, be yourself, and actually enjoy the moment.

So truly… you have nothing to lose, and the confidence-boosting, heart-melting photos you’ve always wished for to gain.

2. Before the Shoot: Getting Ready Without Stress

Let’s Start With Mindset

I know you’re probably already overthinking this. But here’s what I need you to remember:

  • This isn’t a test. There’s literally no way to fail. We’re just hanging out and capturing your family being yourselves.
  • I’m not judging you. Honestly, I never look at a mum and think “she should’ve done this differently.” I’m just looking for the love and connection that’s already there.
  • Kids are going to be kids. Tantrums? Meltdowns? Someone refusing to cooperate? I’ve seen it hundreds of times. Sometimes those messy moments make the most honest, beautiful photos.
  • You’re enough, right now. Not when you lose weight. Not when your skin clears up. Right now.

Try this: Before the session, stand in front of the mirror and say something nice to yourself. I know it feels awkward, but it helps. Even just “I look beautiful today.”

Hair & Makeup

Some mums love getting their hair and makeup done professionally. If that makes you feel amazing, do  it.

But honestly? Some of my favourite photos are of mums who simply did their usual routine. If you’re doing your own makeup, here are a few tips:

  • Do what you normally do, just slightly elevated
  • Add a touch more blush and lipstick (the camera softens colour)
  • Keep your hair soft, natural, and touchable

A few things to keep in mind:
Professional hair and makeup can make a huge difference, especially with hair. Beautiful, well-groomed hair is a big confidence booster and confidence always shows in your photos. If you don’t enjoy doing your own hair and makeup, or if it stresses you out, consider treating yourself to a professional hair stylist.

It sets the tone for a relaxed, beautiful experience and helps you fall in love with your photos forever. And really, isn’t that what every mum wants?

What to Wear

This is where everyone stresses out. So let me make it simple:

What actually matters:

  • Pick something YOU feel good in first, then coordinate everyone else around that
  • You don’t need to match, just choose colors that work together
  • If your shoes hurt or you’re tugging at your clothes, it’ll show on your face

Colours that work perfectly:
Soft tones like cream, taupe, soft blue, dusty pink, olive green. Earth tones are gorgeous outdoors. Skip the bright white (too harsh) and pure black (too heavy). Small patterns are fine, just avoid loud prints.

Stuck on what to wear? Send me photos of your options. I’m happy to help. This should be enjoyable, not another thing to stress about.

And here’s the part I want you to really hear: you are not doing this alone.

I offer full guidance with what to wear, always.
I have detailed written style guides to get you started, but I never leave you hanging with guesswork.

Before your session, we’ll have a proper chat and go through everything together in detail — colours, outfits, textures, accessories, the whole lot. I know this is the part mums stress about the most, so I make sure you feel completely supported.

This should feel enjoyable, not like another decision on your already full plate.

3. During the Shoot: What to Expect

This is the part where you can finally relax. Because once we start shooting, my job is to guide you through everything. You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up and trust the process.

How a session actually flows:

We ease in slowly.
No “Okay everyone, smile!” moments here. We start with something simple — walking together, playing with the kids, or chatting while I quietly take a few warm-up shots.

I Give You Specific, Doable Prompts
Instead of stiff poses, I’ll guide you with actions like:

  • “Pick up your toddler and give them a little spin.”
  • “Whisper a secret in her ear.”
  • “Walk toward me like you’re heading for ice cream.”

See? These aren’t poses, they’re moments. And they create real smiles, real laughter, real connection.

Special Tips for Camera-Shy Mums:

1. You Don’t Have to Look at the Camera
Honestly, some of the most beautiful photos are when you’re looking at your children, not at me. So if direct eye contact with the lens feels uncomfortable, don’t do it.

2. Move Naturally, Don’t Freeze
Static, frozen poses always look stiff. Instead, I’ll have you move:

  • Walk toward me, away from me, along a path
  • Sway while holding your baby
  • Play a game with the kids

Movement creates life in photos. And it gives you something to do with your hands, which helps with nervousness.

3. Engage With Your Kids
This is the secret weapon. When you’re focused on your children, you forget to be self-conscious:

  • Tickle them
  • Whisper something funny
  • Give them a task (“Can you show Mummy your biggest smile?”)

Your face lights up when you’re with them. That’s what we want to capture.

4. Trust Me When I Say “That’s Beautiful”
I know it feels weird. You might think, “But I wasn’t ready!” or “That felt awkward!” But trust me, from behind the camera, it looked beautiful. Some of the best shots happen when you think nothing is happening.

5. Take Breaks If You Need Them
Feeling overwhelmed? Tell me. We can pause, let the kids run around for a minute, take some shots of just them while you catch your breath. This isn’t a race. We have time.

Let’s Sum It Up

I’m a Melbourne motherhood photographer who captures real moments — not stiff posing or forced smiles. My goal is to help mums feel confident, calm, and supported every step of the way. Most families tell me the session was easier and more joyful than they ever expected.

You just show up as you are.
I’ll take care of the rest.
