Spring Family Photos in Melbourne

Spring in Melbourne — isn’t it the best? The days start feeling warmer, the flowers come back to life, and everything just feels a bit lighter. It’s such a lovely time to capture your family. The light is soft, the gardens are full of colour, and everyone’s a little happier to be outdoors again..

For this session, I met a lovely Melbourne family with two little ones — a three-year-old girl and her one-year-old brother. If you’ve got kids under five, you already know what that means… they’ll run the show. And honestly, that’s the best part.

Why Spring Is the Sweet Spot for Family Photos

Spring has this soft, forgiving light that just loves families. It’s nature’s most flattering filter for soft, glowy skin-tones.

Here’s why spring works so beautifully for family portraits:

  • The light is dreamy. Early mornings and late afternoons bathe everything in that dreamy glow.
  • The colours are soft and natural. Think blossoms, fresh greens, soft skies — all easy to blend with your outfits.
  • The weather’s kind. Not too hot, not too cold. Perfect for running, cuddling, and playing without complaints (from anyone).

And because it’s not the peak of summer yet, the parks aren’t too busy. You’ll often have entire corners of nature all to yourselves. If you’ve never experienced a golden hour family session before, this is the season to fall in love with it.

The Best Spring Photography Locations in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs

If you live in Melbourne’s east, you already know… we are truly spoiled for locations. From dreamy gardens to wide, open parklands, there’s beauty in every direction.

Here are a few of my favourite family photography locations in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs (you can explore more on my session location guide):

What Really Makes a Family Session Special

The secret? It’s not the location. It’s your connection.

Beautiful images happen when you stop worrying about where to look and just be with the people you love.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

  • Kids collecting flowers for mum.
  • Parents laughing at the chaos that is trying to get everyone to stand still.
  • Tiny hands grabbing for yours.
  • The way your partner looks at you when you’re not paying attention.

These are the moments I live for – the small, ordinary, extraordinary things that tell your story.

What to Expect From Your Spring Session

If you’re wondering what actually happens during a session, it goes something like this:

  • We arrive and explore. The kids run around (which I love) while we all get comfortable.
  • We find the light. I’ll guide you to the spots with the beautiful, soft light. No awkward posing, just movement, laughter, connection.
  • We play. Games, walks, snuggles, tickles – whatever feels natural to your family.
  • We pause. A few portraits here and there. You won’t even notice how good you look in the light.
  • We finish with laughs and muddy shoes. Sometimes grass stains, always happy hearts.

By the end, most parents say:“Wow… that was way easier than I expected.”

A Few Simple Tips For your Spring Photos

  • Keep it comfy. Think soft fabrics, natural colours, and clothes that move with you.
  • Bring snacks and water. Kids (and let’s be honest, parents) perform better when no one’s hungry.
  • Don’t stress the small things. The best photos usually happen in between the “perfect” ones.
  • Trust your photographer (that’s me!). I’ll handle the timing, angles, and magic. You just show up and enjoy your family.

Why I Love Spring Sessions So Much

If you’ve been thinking about family photos, this is the perfect season to do it — soft light, flowers, loads of greenery and that beautiful feeling of new beginnings. What’s not to love?!

Spring reminds us that life keeps moving, even when we’re busy.

And family photos?

They’re how we hold onto the moments that pass too quickly.

Spring doesn’t hang around forever, and it’s such a special time to create new memories before the year rushes by.

If you’re ready to create your own story this spring, I’d love to help. You can get in touch here to start planning your Melbourne family session
