As a Perth Family Photographer, I document families in beautiful light and location to create stunning works of art that will become your family heirlooms for many years to come. I do my best to capture those candid moments that you want to remember of you littles at this stage of life. While I believe, it is important to get in front of camera of a professional at least once a year as a whole family, it's not enough.

To create a true time capsule for your family, each parent needs to be involved in capturing the every day moments too. Capturing the ‘realness’ of your family is important. The quiet moments at home, the school pick-ups, family dinners etc should also be part of your family’s story as much as the professional family pictures. Don’t wait only for the big milestone moments to happen—they are happening around you every day. I am not just talking about the pretty ones...but also those moments that feel mundane or a routine. They will be gone or look very different in a few years so capture them now!

Let's talk about about the top 10 photos to take that capture your family life right now...and periodically as your kids grow and your family dynamics change.

PHOTOS TO CAPTURE YOUR FAMILY LIFE # 1 BEDTIME ROUTINE

This one is a big one as it changes dramatically as the kids grow. What your routine looks now is probably different to what it looked like 6 months ago. The pyjamas they wear, the books you read at bed time, who puts who to bed. Capture it all!

FAMILY LIFE PHOTO TO CAPTURE # 2 MEAL TIME

Dinner time can be a source of stress and frustration if one (or more) of your kids are going through a picking eating phase. But someday, you won't have family dinners anymore. You won't remember who sat where, what your table looked like and what things you used to eat. Snap a quick picture of what dinner time looks right now this week!

TOP 10 PHOTO TO TAKE OF YOUR FAMILY 3 : CAR RIDES

Who sits where in the car! What do they like doing in the car? What seat they are in? When you are not driving, snap a picture so you can remember what car rides looked like when they were little.

NUMBER 4 : SCHOOL!

School is a big part of family life. Pickups, drop offs all form part of your weekly routine. If you are home schooling, there is even more opportunity to capture these moments.

CAPTURING FAMILY LIFE 5 : BATH-TIME

When the kids are little, don't forget to capture bath time. Bath time are usually relaxing and calming for you little one. The feel of the water on their skin, watching water pour and drain, playing with bubbles and bath toys - there are so many little moments that can become beautiful memories. Don't forget to add age appropriate toys to create variety in your pictures.

FAMILY PHOTO TO TAKE 6 : MUNDANE OUTINGS

We tend to capture the special outings (museums, aquariums, birthday parties) but forget the more everyday ones. Shopping trips, playground visits, hikes. Make sure you document these too!

NUMBER 7 : IN SICKNESS AND HEALTH

That’s right, document your kids when they are sick. Someday, sickness won’t feel as all-consuming as it does when you have littles. Stomach bugs won’t wipe out your entire family and consume every waking moment of your energy. You know that “special” bowl and those ugly towels that you use for you-know-what? Someday you’ll look back and laugh remembering it!

FAMILY LIFE PHOTOS TO CAPTURE # 8 - YOUR HOME

Our family homes are a big part of our memories. It feels weird to take a photo of the front (or back) of your home but I promise you’ll appreciate it someday. You might unexpectedly move. You might paint your house! A renovation might get completed. You kid would love seeing characteristics of where you lived or what things used to look like. If you live in a place with seasons, bonus points for capturing what each season looks like! Take photos in different parts of you home, both inside and outside to have a record of how you spent you days in your home as a family.

IMPORTANT MOMENTS # 9 - WHAT ARE THEY OBSESSED WITH

What your kids is into or loves playing can change in a flash. They go from being obsessed with one thing to another before you can blink. While it might feel strange to document your kids playing video games or dressed up in a frozen dress, you will appreciate having a record of what they used to love at a particular age. Maybe you kid is into certain sport, or loves playing a musical instrument. These little obsessions may, in some cases, shape the rest of their lives. Capture these as they would most certainly become precious memories one day.

EVERYDAY LIFE 10 : HOW YOU SPEND TIME AS A FAMILY

Every family has their own way of spending time together or something they love doing with each other. It could be a living room sleepover, picnics at the beach, family game night or going fishing over the weekend. How you spend time together as a family will change as your children grow. Make sure to documents these too! You can use a timer on your phone and a tripod ( or anything else to hold your phone/ camera) to get all of your family together in the picture.

That's it for my top 10! If you have any to add, leave it in the comments below. I hope this post inspires you to capture everyday moments of your family life. Spend a few moments today thinking about everything that you would love to remember about your family life say 10 -15 years from now then make a list. Keep adding to this list as you think of other things. When taking picture of your family, please remember - good photography is about quality not quantity. You don't need to be on your phone or camera all the time to create a time capsule for your family. Select your moments and have fun!
