Spring is a season of new beginnings, and there's no better time to capture the essence of childhood than during this time of year. The world is full of color, flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining, making it the perfect time to schedule a children's portrait session.
Preparation is the key to amazing portraits
Ah, the joys of sibling photoshoots! As a Perth sibling photographer, I’ve seen it all – from sulky teenagers to uncooperative toddlers. But let me tell you, a recent session I had with a 2 year old boy and 3 year old girl was an absolute delight. These two had me in stitches the whole time!
First things first, I always take the time to find out what your vision is for your final portraits and plan all the little details accordingly. That is how we create beautiful, stunning portraits time and time again.
Finding the perfect location was crucial, and I was on the lookout for a place with a rustic and natural vibe. After some scouting around, I stumbled upon this sweet little spot by the side of the road in Jane Brook. It was perfect! The kids would have plenty of space to run around and play, and I could capture some beautiful candid moments. The location worked beautifully in the final images.
Styling the photoshoot
Now, onto the styling. Mum wanted an old world vibe for the final portraits. We used subtle colours when choosing clothing so it did not take the attention away from the beautiful kids. We also wanted the kids to be comfortable and able to move around freely. The little girl was a natural fashionista, so we went for a couple of simple but cute dresses. For the boy, I chose a simple white vest and brown pants, but I added hats and suspenders for a super cute look.
I have a growing collection of elegant and classic children clothing in my clients closet ( that looking amazing in photos!) but if you prefer to purchase clothing for your kids photoshoot, The Simple Folk & Piparoo are a couple of my favourite retailers.
Best time for photoshoot
As always, the photo shoot was planned for sunset – the lighting at that time of day is just magical, and it’s a great way to get some beautiful, warm, and glowy shots. But, it was a cloudy day so we ended up shooting a little earlier.
When it comes to photographing kids, it’s essential to capture their personalities. I chatted with the parents beforehand to get to know the kids a little better and find out what they liked to do. The little boy loved teddies and riding his tricycle, and the girl was obsessed with cameras and posing.

Day of the shoot
On the day of the photoshoot, I arrived early to set up and make sure everything was ready. I started by letting the kids get comfortable with me and the camera. I brought along a vintage camera for the girl and a tricycle for the little boy to get them laughing and having fun.
Once they were relaxed, we started with some posed shots, and then I let them loose to play and have fun. The kids were happy to explore the beautiful location. The little girl loved playing with the vintage camera, and pretended to take some photos of the flowers and bugs....sorry there was no film in the camera but it was still super fun for her! We had the little boy drive around with his tricycle, which resulted in some adorable shots.
The session flew by! We captured some stunning shots of the kids playing and laughing in this beautiful spot, and the parents were thrilled with the results.
Overall, this photoshoot was an absolute blast, and I’m so glad I got to capture these precious memories for the family. With a bit of planning, some styling, and a lot of fun, we were able to create some beautiful and memorable images that the family will cherish for years to come.
